Emergency Assistance to Victims of
Hurricanes Gustav and Ike
|
Hurricane Gustav hit Cuba on August 30,
2008, and is considered to be the most damaging hurricane to have hit Cuba
in the last 50 years. Hurricane Ike followed shortly thereafter,
in early September. The hurricanes damaged the homes of 2 million
people and displaced an additional 3 million, damaged food warehouses and
destroyed community cooking facilities.
WFP
launched an emergency operation in Cuba to provide assistance to the victims
of both hurricanes in October. WFP supplemented government-supplied
food, with a focus on vulnerable groups such as children under five, pregnant
women and those over 65. WFP also supplied temporary food storage
facilities and liquid gas stoves to enable the communities to begin rebuilding
their lives. The project has been extended through June 2009 to ensure
all food and cooking oil deliveries to persons in need are completed.
