NARF is one of the oldest
Native American non-profits in the country that has served as a leader
in the Native American civil rights movement. Since 1970, NARF has
served as a non-profit legal and advocacy organization that has assisted
more than 250 tribes with critical issues pertaining to tribal sovereignty,
environmental protection, religious freedom, government accountability,
subsistence hunting and fishing, Indian child welfare and education.
NARF specializes in providing legal assistance to tribes, American Indian
individuals and organizations who lack adequate resources for legal representation.
NARF's national headquarters are based in Boulder, Colorado with branch
offices in Washington D.C. and Anchorage, Alaska.
Devendra Banhart exploded
on the international music scene in 2002 quickly winning a coterie of devoted
fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos right from
the outset. His latest release is Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, recorded
at home in Topanga, CA throughout the Spring of 2007 co-produced by Noah
Georgeson and Devendra. The critics’ acclaim and the size of his
audience both at home and abroad earned by his debut Oh Me Oh My The Way
The Day Goes By The Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs Of The Christmas
Spirit was impressive to begin with and increased dramatically with
each subsequent release: 2004’s Rejoicing In The Hands, Nino Rojo and 2005’s
Cripple Crow. Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon is his second release on
XL Recordings.
"We are honored and overwhelmed
by Devendra Banhart's willingness to do this benefit concert for NARF,"
stated NARF Executive Director John Echohawk. Echohawk, who has been
named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by the National
Law Journal, also added "We are also grateful to the Guacamole Fund for
their efforts to help organize this event with Devendra for NARF.
NARF is 100% reliant on charitable contributions and proceeds from special
events such as concerts like this to support our ongoing work to defend
Native American rights.”
